The wood for this bowl was taken from a beech log that had sat out in the weather for 6 years. It had become heavily spalted but was turned before the wood structure softened and weakened from fungi. The wood was rough turned, flooded with a hardening oil (Tung Oil), bark inclusions were carved away, voids were inlaid, and then finish turned and sanded. The wood was then sprayed with lacquer to create a lustrous food-safe finish.
